Yesterday the U.S. celebrated its 234th birthday in usual fashion the citizens of this country cooked out, held parties, went to parades, waved their flags and set off fireworks. Independence Day used to be one of my favorite Summer holidays (not just because it was my maternal grandmother’s birthday) but because I genuinely felt excited to be a citizen of this country. Now that I’m a much older and more cynical adult (who has a firmer grasp on politics and history) I am beginning to wonder if we (the U.S. as a whole) have strayed from the core principles and values put forth our founding documents? I think from what we’ve seen in recent years that many would agree that we’ve seen a diminishing liberties and rights in this country. We’ve seen numerous abuses of power committed by all three branches of government, corporations have been allowed to run rough shot over the rights of U.S. citizens (including the billions in bailout money subsidized by the taxpayer), the parties (on both sides) have lost their senses in favor of electoral politics and we’ve seen an sudden increase in fanaticism by so called “conservatives” with the invention of the modern day “Tea Parties”. While I personally don’t agree with their incoherent and sometimes racist/homophobic/and even sexist philosophies, I can understand why they are angry. We as citizens of the U.S. have been duped into believing that those currently in government know what they are doing, in reality they are so bent on power and control that they’ve lost all common sense and have been corrupted by corporate entities that don’t necessarily have this country’s best interests in mind all they see is $$$ (x6).
A couple of question have been rambling about my brain as of late: How do we really fix this? Is it even fixable? Or are we doomed to fall apart in 500 years like the great empires of the past? I personally don’t have the answer to any of these questions, I wish I did. We probably won’t see any real change until we’ve taken back our institutions from the abusers, the nut ball fringe and large multi-national corporate interests. Until then if you all have ideas that you’d like to float feel free to leave’em in the comment section!
